The humanity trade does not start with exhaustion. It starts with efficiency, the moment you begin deciding which parts of yourself are allowed to show up
How the Humanity Trade StartsIt was a fair exchange at the beginning. You gave focus and got traction. You gave comfort and got authority. You gave spontaneity and got precision. And for a long time, you could see what you were giving and what you were getting back. Then the humanity trade shifted. It stopped asking. It stopped being something you could see happening. And it started taking on its own. Quietly. Without you noticing. You gave up being delighted and did not notice because you were busy being effective. You gave up being affected and did not notice because you were busy being strategic. You gave up the reaction and kept the composure, and it looked so much like progress that you never questioned it.
It Stopped Being a DecisionYou do not sit in a meeting and choose to hold back what you feel. It happens before you get there. By the time you notice what you might have felt, it is already gone. You learned which emotions were useful and which ones were not. Joy that did not serve a purpose started to feel indulgent. Sadness became something to move through fast. Anger became something to channel or contain. Vulnerability became something you could not afford at your level. And after enough of that, you stopped noticing you were doing it. Not suppression. Not denial. Something smaller than both. You have been pulling yourself back for so long that the unpulled version of you does not feel like you anymore, almost too much, as though what you actually feel is louder than you are used to.
You Already Have What You Traded ForThe authority. The traction. The precision. You earned those a long time ago. But the trade did not stop when you got there. Identity Lag kept it going. And the longer it goes, the harder it is to remember what you were like before it started. You know you used to respond differently. You know something has changed. But you cannot quite recall what it felt like to be the version of you that had not yet learned to hold what you feel at a distance before you let it in. You do not grieve it. You have lived with it so long you have stopped calling it a loss. It was built when you still had something to prove. You do not anymore. But you are still holding back as though you do.
When the Humanity Trade StopsYou do not have to undo what you built. You do not have to become less. Something comes up, and this time you do not pull back. A reaction you let yourself have before you decide what to do with it. A conversation you stay in past the point where it is going somewhere. Something you feel that earns you nothing and you let it exist anyway. Maximum Simplicity. Not the absence of complexity. The permission to feel without deciding what it is for first. What would shift if you let yourself feel for a whole day without deciding whether it was worth feeling.
If this has been going so long you stopped noticing, book a 15-minute Strategy Call and begin with what you are still giving away.
