The Decision Bottleneck in Leadership

A decision bottleneck clearing as a leader hands decisions back to the people closest to them

A decision bottleneck rarely looks like one from the inside. It looks like being helpful.

let’s level up:

Grow Yourself To Grow Your Business

Smash through growth ceilings,
again and again to new heights
in business, leadership and life.

A Week Full of Other People’s Calls

You look at your week and it is back to back with decisions. Half of them belong to people who are perfectly capable of making them.

They bring them to you, you weigh in, and you tell yourself you are being helpful. Each time you do, you teach them again that anything significant has to go through you.

You built the bottleneck. Now you are the bottleneck.

What the Decision Bottleneck Costs You

The judgement only you can bring is being spent on calls that did not need you. By the time the decisions that move the business reach you, you are already worn out from the ones that did not.

So you defer them. You sit on them. The call that needed making this week gets made next month, or not at all.

The business ends up with your most tired judgement on the decisions that deserve your sharpest.

It Was Not About Authority

When a decision happens without your input, something in you reads it as unsafe. Somewhere you learned that being the one who decides is how you stay trusted, in control, or worth something.

That belief built your career. Now it is the thing keeping you in the seat.

There is a second cost too. When every call goes through one person, the business can only move as fast as that person can decide, and the people under you do not get the chance to grow into the judgement you keep holding onto.

Sorting a Week of Decisions

Take one week of decisions and sort them into three piles: the ones only you can make, the ones someone else should make with your input, and the ones someone else should own outright.

Handing Decisions Back

Start with the third pile. Hand it away completely, and then stop being consulted on it. This is the hard part, because checking in with you has become a habit, for them and for you. Let it go anyway.

The second pile needs a person and a clear standard, not a habit of running things past you. Set the bar, then step back. Their call will look different from yours. Let it.

Where the Decision Bottleneck Starts to Clear

What is left is the first pile, and it is small. That is the work only you can do, and it deserves the clear-headed version of you that the other two piles have been using up for years.

If your week is full of other people’s decisions, the question is not how to decide faster. Why is it so hard to let them decide?

If you can already name a few decisions you are holding onto, book a 15-minute Strategy Call and we will find what is keeping you in the seat.
